The thermostat plate is what gives it the color. A matching plate is sent with each baseboard heater purchased, which is separate from the thermostat. If they order a white heater, then a white plate is sent that is made to fit over a TBD Thermostat. If they order an ivory baseboard heater, an ivory plate is sent. A single pole thermostat operates off one circuit, this means the power to the unit can only operate in one direction or electrical current. Because of this the single pole thermostat cannot be turned off, but only turned down.

Wall mounted and can be used for operation of all 120/240 V electric baseboards, heaters and fans. Single Pole: breaks one side of the line. Rated 20 A, 120/240 VAC. Adjustable range 50 to 90 deg F. Recommended for all 120 V units. Mount in standard deep receptacle box. U.L. Listed.

A double pole thermostat is wired directly to the main circuit breaker but will have four wires instead of two. This allows for the thermostat to operate on two separate circuits. Double pole thermostats have an "off" button and can cut off power completely to the heater, even if the temperature drops below the set temperature.
